"Bloemetjes........Small Flowers"

Between the triangles around the compass of Love Entwined, Esther's 1790 quilt, grow sweet little flowers..

It is one of those lovely surprises in antique quilts, and I have embroidered the stems with a Pekinese stitch in two colours....

I have made the flowers in blue and pink, with a contrasting heart, and I have altered the pattern a little, because I wanted them to come further out......these are my own design, and therefore copyright. The leaves are very light, otherwise they are too prominent.

As usual I have used needleturn applique. Here they are still with freezer paper on top, to see if they are in the right place.

Zo ziet het er uit als alles er op zit.

This is what it looks like when they are all stitched down.

And now I can start on the large flowers.....72 petals in freezer paper....next time you will see how I do them...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Needleturn zigzag border"

I have been surprised how quickly the diamonds can be pieced, and how much I enjoyed it!

Here they are on the piano, ready for the first border. I still have to make around 700 more, but that can wait till later, those will be for the next borders.....

I had printed the diamonds on Floriani Fusible Stitch & Wash. After washing half of it dissolves. I cut a piece as big as printerpaper, and taped it top and sides and put it through the printer. Then all I had to do was to cut them all out. In part 2 van Esther's pattern of Love Entwined, this was the last page, very handy!(I did write a 'd' on one side of the diamonds, so that I would know which ones to iron on the dark fabrics..)

Before I pin them on the border, I iron the seam allowance open. Normally I don't do this, but this time I want to needleturn the border.

After pinning, I baste them to the background between the threaded guide lines.

I start to applique right up to the tip of the first one....

The second one I pin back, so that I can see what I am doing....This is of course the advantage of piecing them by hand, because the seam ends at the end of the diamond, and doesn't run to the end of the fabrics...

Now I cut a little bit off the first point, because that seam allowance has to be turned back under itself.

Then I push the rest under the first point with the needle, or anything else that is handy, like a toothpick...

The first one is done, so now I cut a little bit off the second one, just like with a point of a leaf.....(see my leaf-tutorial)

Die punt wordt er ook onder geduwd...

That point is pushed under too....

En dan kan ik weer verder appliceren..

And then I can carry on with the applique

Next time I'll show how I make these flowers with needleturn...

They are really a lot smaller than you may think!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Scrappy zig-zag border..."

For several weeks I have been wondering how I would do the zig zag border in Esther's 1790 Love Entwined quilt.
My original plan was piecing them together with freezer paper behind, and then needleturning around that, taking the freezerpaper out at the last minute.
I don't like using starch or glue, so I needleturn everything in sight..;o) But in my experience, freezerpaper tends to come off when piecing little pieces. When I did the Dear Jane, that was not a problem, but I wanted this to stay put until I could start the applique.

Suddenly I thought that I had 9 metres of Floriani Stitch N Wash Fusible Soluble Stabiliser, so I could try that for the border. It would not come off as quickly and would be softer to work with.
I have a strip of background fabric where I try out stitches, effects etc.
On the left are two pieces with Floriani, which I have also washed after the applique.
On the right I used freezer paper.
The result did not differ much, but I found the Floriani much nicer to work with, and the measurement was exactly like the pattern.

So I took all the bits of freezer paper off the pieces of fabric, and ironed Floriani behind them instead, and it is lovely and very quick to piece these. Later on I can just needleturn the border onto the background. The Floriani stays inside, but with washing half of it dissolves, and it feels lovely and soft.

I have a lovely tin with compartments for this, that I was given by my niece Hetty in Holland.  On the left are the dark fabrics, on the right the light ones, and in the centre a pincushion, thread, and the pieces that have been joined together.

Early this morning there was such a lovely sky again, when I was sitting here piecing...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Scrappy..."

I always thought that a scrappy quilt was just putting together all different sorts of fabrics.
Until I started Esther's Love Entwined 1790 coverlet......the original looks to me like a scrappy quilt too, when I study the black and white photo, so I want the same feel for mine....

What struck me is how much time goes into carefully considering colour, but especially values of light and dark. To get that balance right is important, and every next step is another adventure into the unknown.
I have now sorted my fabrics by colour, but also into light, dark and medium values. I kept to dark and light for the triangles, but because of the different prints, some look darker and others lighter. It gives it a lively look anyway. I am hoping I can keep this up for the rest of the quilt!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Driehoekjes...........Triangles"

The pieces for Esther's 1790 Love Entwined quilt are ready, but how do I make sure that they will be in the right place?

I always work in this way. First I trace the pattern onto write-on transparancies, and I stick the sheets together if the pattern is too big for one.

Then I trace the parts of the pattern onto freezerpaper, iron these on the right side of the fabric, and  pin them under the overlay in the right place. First I start with every other one, so that I have room for the pins, and I can see what I am doing.

I take off the freezerpaper, baste the pieces, and start with the second round. The overlay is held securely in place by my heavy iron.

Dan worden deze ook vastgeregen.

Then I can baste these as well.

Sometimes I double check, before I start basting...

When the second layer is pinned on, I can start basting those pieces too.

When the freezerpaper was still on the pieces, I outlined it with a white Clover pen. You can see the line clearly (click on the photo to see it larger), but it disappears later, when it is pressed from the back with a warm iron.

Then everything is secure, and I can start needleturning, which I really enjoy. Although, I have to say that I enjoy all the preparations too! I start at the rounded end, so that I can make sure that the corners touch each other.

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Zomer...................Summer"

Deze week heb ik maar 1 blok gequilt....

This week I have only been able to quilt  one block..

Even in the shadow of the trees it became too hot..

Eerst de blaadjes,

First the leaves...

And then the bird...
I hope I can do a bit more next week!

But, despite the heat, I have not been sitting still. The compass of Esther's Love Entwined had to be sewn onto the background fabric. I basted it very carefully, so that it would not puff up.
I took a long thread, started in the centre, and basted 'west', then with the other half of the same thread went 'east'.
Then I did the same with another thread going 'north' and 'south', and then in between them.
I also basted right along the circle edge.

Then I appliqued it to the background with needleturn. The basted thread along the edge I took out little by little, so that nothing could shift.

It is done, and it is as flat as a pancake..

Here is the whole centre square of the quilt. There will be lots of applique on it...

And also a zig-zag border with  160 diamonds, they have to be prepared.

It is still very warm, nice weather for the Amelanchier in the garden...

Even at night it looks as if the sun does not really want to go down...

But at last there is a moon, and it is cooler...so that we can sleep for a few hours...

Now I can place the triangles around the compass...

Fijne dag

Have a nice day

"Keep Calm and Quilt....."

All the circles are  finished on the compass of Esther's Love Entwined 1790 BOM.....I did them with traditional needleturn...

and so the first Part is done...

Lief he?

When Carin saw my compass, she wrote that she had the same dark blue fabric that she would never use - would I like it? What do you think? I am very happy with it, because I only had a small piece! Isn't that sweet?

So now I am waiting impatiently for Part Two, 5 more sleeps...Last night I entertained myself by making a slogan on the laptop. This was the result....

En wat heb ik dus vandaag gedaan? Nou, gequilt, dus.

So what did I do today? Well, quilt. In the back of the garden, where there was a nice breeze, so it is not too hot...

Eerst de paarden...

First the horses.....

toen het vreemde mannetje met de olifant...

then the strange little man with the elephant......

en daarna een pauwtje...

and then a peacock...

And here is the compass again in the sun, because it is really summer now.....

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!
